BATHINDA: Transcending boundaries, Pakistan’s Lahore reverberated with the slogan of “Long live the memories of Bhagat Singh” on Wednesday, the 91st martyrdom day of the freedom fighter, along with a demand to rename Shadman Chowk in the city — where he was hanged along with Sukhdev and Rajguru — in 1931
The Pakistan-based followers of the freedom fighter paid tribute to Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev at Shadman Chowk in the capital of Punjab province, which was once a part of Lahore Central Jail where the trio was hanged on March 23, 1931.
Among them, the members of Progressive Students Collective demanded the place to be renamed after Shaheed Bhagat Singh.
Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation chairman Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi said that the sacrifices made by them will always be remembered in the subcontinent.
“We want Bhagat Singh to be treated as freedom fighter in Pakistan and the chowk should be named after him,” Rashid Qureshi stated, adding founder of Pakistan Quid-I-Azam had appreciated Bhagat Singh in Delhi assembly on September 4, 1929.
He added Pakistan too had every right over the memory of Bhagat Singh as the freedom fighter was not only born in Faislabad village (now in Pakistan) but had spent most of the time of his short but meaningful life in Lahore. “Bhagat Singh was an icon of struggle for freedom and nobody has the right to snatch our rich heritage,” said Qureshi.
In April 2013, Qureshi had filed a petition in the Lahore high court for re-opening Bhagat Singh’s final case so that he can be declared innocent, on the basis of an FIR retrieved that year, where his name did not figure in the murder of assistant superintendent of police JP Saunders in December 1928.
